SM Calamba's fence is up....
Posted On 06/09/2008 20:33:41
It was a busy June 5 morning when the strong rain suddenly poured down resulting in the immediate  traffic slow-down in the vicinity of Crossing, Calamba City. As the rain was continuously falling and there was no sign of it letting up, I decided to just take a walk to Waltermart from the fruit stands since I was assigned to man the exhibit booth for that day. I then zig-zagged my way past the vehicles and started walking to reach my destination. I was already near the department store when I noticed that the blue long-spanned galvanized iron sheets have been put up.

Who would not recognize the two lettered giant of the retail chains? Who would not recall the department store who tag themselves as the one who have got it all? Who would dare challenge the might and financial muscle of Henry Sy and his group of companies?  But such is the way of development.

The site forms part of former ricefields that has been converted to commercial land with the advent of big businesses. It was, still is, and will be the site of more bustles and hustles as another major player comes in to the city.  Soon, everybody will be trooping in to this new destination.

And with this, the market value of the nearby lands and establishments will soar into a new high. The farmers who use to plant and harvest on the land has seen better days for their crops. And land conversion is easily being cited as the reason for the alleged rice shortage but a housing expert has denied that this is the case. He told the real estate brokers gathered during a brokers' forum that the main reason for the decrease in output was that the farmers shifted to corn and other crops as they find it difficult to get a fair price for their produce. Now, the farmers are shifting back to rice as palay prices has gone up excessively and they will be earning more if they will produce rice.

In the meantime, money, machineries and manpower of big businesses continue to operate, even when it rains, and they are now readying themselves to get a fair share of business from Calamba and nearby places. Will this redound to the majority's benefits or will it just signal the demise of bustling commerce from the city's traders? The city of my affection needs to brace themselves up as SM Calamba will soon be constructed.

Calamba City, Extended Metropolitan Area
Posted On 05/29/2008 20:28:33

Today, I write a new blog. It is about the
Extended Metropolitan Area of Calamba, Cabuyao, Sta. Rosa. I write about these places for they have become melting pot of cultures. Since the inception of industrial zones, many young transients decided to make these extended metro area their home. The area has welcomed people from the mountainous North down to the historic and freedom loving South. You can easily notice the boom and how it has made what used to be already progressive towns to more highly-industrialized areas. BPOs have decided to operate on these high-tech zones. Agricultural lands have been converted to industrial complexes And investors are pouring their money on investments making sure that their slice of the pie will be bigger, tastier, and better. Human and vehicular traffic has grown by leaps and bounds and big players will soon swoop down on its attracive territories as different developments such as South Forbes Golf City metamorphoses into dream communities, Eton City will develop its 1,000 hectare property and Ayala-Yulo will take the lead to impress investors with its 1, 500 hectare masterplanned development. The California boom of yesterday is duplicating itself through these high-development projects and what we need to do is to ride the crest of this boom. At the same time, it would be to the best interest of everybody if safety nets, in terms of environmental and human concerns are addressed. We need to befriend progress now else we find ourselves in history's dustbin. Now, where will all of this lead us to?

The Merry Month of May
Posted On 05/29/2008 20:21:46

The Merry Month of May

Once more, it is the merry month of flowers, the month of fiestas, the month of May. This is usually the time for get-togethers, the much-awaited moment when friends, old and new gather in different places of the country and partake of culinary feasts laid down in mouth-watering and colorful displays. This is another time of joyous revelry, of laughters at the beaches and resorts, and of walks and talks shared among friends and peers.

It has been a tradition in the Philippines that during this month, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, flower offerings are done in most churches. The fiesta celebrations usually last for a day or several days to honor a patron saint of a particular place and to give thanks to God for a bountiful harvest and a fruitful year.

As finances would allow, there are different ways of celebrating the joyous occasion. For some barangays, the people are awakened by the live band marching on the streets of their place, for others there is the roving carnival pitching their pre-fabricated structures on some parts of the town or city. For most residents, the loud music blaring on their components or karaokes are already signal attractions for their visitors that in deed, they are part of the momentous event. There are masses, processions, contests, buntings, and kaleidoscope of colors. There is vehicular and human traffic everywhere.

Today, it is no longer a surprise to find ati-atihan groups, and the itinerant vendors with their chicks, whatchamacallits, and balloons, swooping on a barangay to do business. The city mayor and even the barangay captain's home magnetizes many of them during the meal hours and the celebration continues until the end of the day, when many revelers are already tired, but happy.

The flowers bloom and spread their fragrances, people enjoy their fiestas, and everybody celebrate the merry month of May.

Under all is the land, at the heart of every Pinoy is Pinoyland.
