Has anyone here built their own house?  If so what were the lessons learned?  What should we keep in mind when we do it ourselves?

when you do it yourself, be sure you have a detailed blueprint plan of your house approved by the Building Official. Always put in mind that its violation of any provision of the code to construct a building without a building permit.

The advantage of doing it yourself is you are  sure that you use the materials specified in the Gen. specs/plans and you can save money. The disadvantage is that it is so tiring because you have to be there always in the site doing and checking the works.Whereas, if you hire a contractor who will do everything, no more worries and hassles. But its worth everything when you see the fruits of your labor.

Build a house within your budget. The bigger the area, the bigger the cost. You can design your house by yourself or find an architect to do that and do all the complete set of plans. Above all, always remember that before the construction, you must secure a building permit from the office of the Building Official where the house is to be constructed. No building permit is a violation of the Building Code . Anyone violating the code will pay the corresponding administrative fines and surcharge.
