Some historians claim that Mother's Day originates in Ancient Greeks they celebrated a holiday in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods;
In ancient Romans celebrated a holiday in honour of Cybele, a mother goddess, March 22-25 - the celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome;
in the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddess Brigid, and later her successor St. Brigid, were honoured with a spring Mother's Day, connected with the first milk of the ewes;
in the US - Julia Ward Howe wrote the original Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870, as a call for peace and disarmament. (Civil War) - although a more amusing view would be from Erma Bombeck.
These are just for facts that Mother's Day is celebrated. "Why" we celebrate (or why anyone celebrates anything) is unique to that person and/or community.
"Mothers" are given a special celebration because of the sacrifices they make to carry a baby and rear a child until that child is able to fend for his/herself. Then there's always the physical pain of child-birth.
Life's truly a miracle, and mothers are the one's who substantially sustain life on this planet. Without our "Mother" we would not be the adults that we have become without their nurturing, friendship and guidance. Moms are caregivers, cheerleaders, counselors, nutritionists and so much more. We Love You Nanay!!!
